http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrcobYP7oHo Yonder Alonso is quickly making a name for himself in the majors. The Padres first baseman has done it all this season, offensively and defensively and has the Padres (21-24) just 4 1/2 games back of first place in the NL West as of May 22.
"It's definitely been fun, It's been a good season so far. We are healthy and hopefully we can continue that," Alonso told Class Act Sports exclusively prior to the Padres' two game series with the Orioles in mid-May.
Alonso's timely hit in the first game came in the ninth inning which started a rally with the Padres down, 2-1. He scored the tying run as the Padres took a 3-2 lead and went on to win by that score, also making a few web gems in the field. They also won the second game of the series 8-4, getting two big wins, as was Alonso's goal.
"Hopefully it is a little bit of bragging rights for the whole year so, hopefully we can come out of here with the two wins and it will be a lot of fun. It's obviously welcoming with a challenge of a two-day getaway game but I think it's going to be a lot of fun. It's going to be  exciting and hopefully we can come out of here with the W's," he told Jared Ginsberg of Class Act Sports.
Alonso has six home runs, is batting .281, and his 26 RBIs lead the team. He said his first trip to Camden Yards was special.
"It's definitely my first time here and I am very excited. Not only the tradition and the history that the Orioles have obviously in this park but I am going to see a lot of friends that I obviously know and I played with so I am really excited about that," he said.
Despite his early season success, there's always room for improvement according to Alonso.
"It's been a lot of fun, just adjusting every day on the daily grind of baseball and just learning as I go and becoming a student of the game. So far it's worked out for me," Alonso told Class Act Sports.
No stranger to Class Act Sports, Alonso looked a bit different in this interview with some new facial hair.
"It's kind of had its own little life to it. I think the people of San Diego enjoy it. I've kind of let it go. Obviously superstitious. I've been doing pretty well, the team has been doing well. I'll keep it like this as long as we're doing well. Hopefully it can grow out really really big," he said.
